Lactose intolerance results due to the inability of digesting the lactose and sugars present in the milk. Lactose intolerant babies suffer from pain in tummy followed by diarrhea and vomiting. Babies may experience pain with in thirty minutes of consuming milk (formula or breast milk). Pediatricians are the right persons to diagnose the problem and treat them by changing the feeds. Lactose intolerant babies suffer from pain that is caused due to the over production of gas. The gas is accumulated in the intestines causing inconvenience for babies. Babies may cry continuosly or twist around to get relief from pain. Babies can not enjoy sound sleep and they wake up and cry a lot as the pain starts. Colic is also one of the symptoms of lactose intolerance in babies. Babies may have some ear infections and often face loose stools. The color of stool also differs in these babies (mostly dark color). The babies need immediate medication to avoid dehydration due to the loss of fluids.
There is a possibility of manifesting eczema in lactose intolerant babies. Babies may have dry skin or scaly red patches on their bodies which may be itchy causing inconvenience. The babies skin should be taken care with the use of moisturizing soaps and moisturizing lotions. The deficiency of lactase (an enzyme) is the main reason for lactose intolerance (related to digestive system) in babies. Lactase helps in digesting the lactose (sugar) present in milk. This is not a common problem but is mostly observed in babies suffering from diarrhea or in premature babies. Some babies are born by birth with lactose intolerance and becuase of this they can not produce enough lactase to digest lactose which is the key ingredient in cow's milk and other products related to dairy. The various reasons for lactose intolerance are due to the presence of lactase in milk, bowel infections, diarrhea and milk allergy. These reasons can be rectified by changing the feeds and foods with complete nutrition for the healthy growth and development of the baby. Breast feeding can be continued instead of bottle feed and try to visit your doctor regularly for check-ups. Lactose intolerance will never harm your baby a far as the growth is normal and the baby is fed with complete nutrition and balanced diet. The inability to digest lactose may ultimately lead to the weaken the digestive system with many disorders. Proper medication if necessary and avoiding foods with lactose can be helpful in treating the babies with lactose intolerance. |
